Were these mini’s came from?
The origins of this Kickstarter go back to 2023, when I began sculpting a soft-fantasy Conquistador army based on one I made in high school using converted Warlord and other ECW figures. Sadly, I can’t find any good photos of that original army, so these new models are based largely on my memories of it, recreated with modern skills and technology.
I’ve since made a bunch of the units I remember, and for release I’ve decided to bring the project to Kickstarter to fund additional regiments and characters that other people will be after. These will be included as stretch goals to round out the army and make it usable across different game systems.
The range is loosely inspired by Renaissance and Conquistador designs, with a fantasy twist through the inclusion of halflings, dwarves and ogres. Much of the armour is deliberately stylised, although many of the figures remain fairly grounded in history.
Another big input came in June, when local gamer Ben H., a great artist and painter, produced some concept art to help push the fantasy elements further. If you’ve followed my work, you’ll know I tend to avoid the “detail for the sake of detail” style, so Ben’s concepts were useful inspiration for pushing me further in that direction. If you look closely at the finished range, you can probably spot which models were sculpted before his concepts and which came afterwards.
The seventh day of August, 1532we came upon a local tribe of this country, who, after much discussion, agreed to lead us toward the outskirts of an ancient city hidden in the Forest Yet when we reached a Glimpse of the first structure and beheld its sheer size, they would go no further with us. Of what lay beyond they would say nothing, and by signs alone made plain that no man of their people willingly Ventures there.— From the Chronicle of Hernando de Montemayor, Officer in Captain Cesaro’s Company
