A Project by Josh
Hi, the story is long but short. We are a father son duo, with a shared passion for all things historical wargaming. It is a passion that has evolved over the years from the start of opening Games Workshop starter sets and taking ages to build, paint, paint, paint and maybe eventually get to play a game. Over the years the hobby evolved and I found myself playing more competitive games and tournaments eventually winning a junior tournament when I was 14, I would look for my armies to be fast, and hard hitting, aiming for the game to be over as quick as possible, with as many memorable moments as possible, this meant there were many fast wins, and many times the losses were just as quick.
In 2020, fresh from opening a restaurant, COVID hit. Money was tight, and time was plentiful. My dad at this point mentioned Historical wargaming, and before I knew it, I had built up a 1500+ strong Napoleonic French army, my dad at this time was doing the same only with British. Once our armies were finished, we found we had an even bigger problem, due to my dad living in Switzerland at the time, and visits were few and far. We eventually settled on doing a demonstration game at a Wargaming event named Colours in Newbury, we originally did a small game and found we loved the experience and promised to do it the following year.
The following year we put on a massive game, with close to 2000 individual 28mm models, and over a 12.5ft x 6ft table we recreated Salamanca using the rules from a well known wargaming company. This featured in some well known Wargaming magazines in the UK.
Naturally we wanted to do it again, as what was now becoming family tradition to spend a weekend in Newbury, the next dilemma was what period to do next? We had done Napoleonic’s 2 years in a row, and we wanted something different.
We settled on the French/Indian war, due to the expansive nature of the period, and the challenge of building a massive table, and painting the 1000+ models needed.
Over the past 6 months, we have been play testing various rulesets, and had concluded early on, that there didn’t seem to be one that complimented what we wanted and what we enjoyed.
We needed a fast, brutal ruleset, that covered various dynamics with skirmishing, buildings, artillery, cavalry and most importantly the early formations used by the Infantry.
As a result, we have been working/playtesting our own rules, and have included everything we love about wargaming, while keeping it as a compact quick and easy game to play. We have touched on the various weather conditions and the effects it would have on a battlefield, the competency of generals (not all of them were competent), the result of units losing models and the effect it would have with morale and also their ability to respond, and in true fashion for ourselves, we have made sure there is plenty of dice to be rolled, while keeping a twist on the rules (a double 6 isn’t necessarily a good thing).
