The game simulates battles from the horse and musket period, from the early 18th century up to the late 19th century.
The system is designed to allow players to refight big battles using large formations, rather than focusing on individual models.
Black Powder uses a simple turn structure where one player moves all their units, followed by the other player.
Orders are given by officers, and a unit’s distance from its officer can affect the success of the order, incorporating a leadership test mechanic.
Instead of removing models for casualties, units receive “hit” markers that reflect a loss of combat effectiveness, fatigue, or ammunition expenditure.
The rules are designed to be played at various miniature scales, from 15mm to 28mm, allowing for different table sizes.
