Black Powder – 2nd Edition

Black Powder is a set of tabletop wargame rules by Warlord Games for recreating 18th and 19th-century conflicts using historical miniaturesThe system uses a fast-paced, “I go, you go” turn structure, emphasizes big battles with large unit formations rather than individual model removal, and is known for its open and “gentlemanly” approach to gaming, with rules designed for large-scale, fun games that focus on the enjoyment of historical hobbyists. The rules cover the horse and musket era, with players moving units of infantry, cavalry, and artillery to simulate historic engagements.

Key Features
  • Historical Focus:

The game simulates battles from the horse and musket period, from the early 18th century up to the late 19th century.

  • Large Battles:

The system is designed to allow players to refight big battles using large formations, rather than focusing on individual models.

  • “I Go, You Go” System:

Black Powder uses a simple turn structure where one player moves all their units, followed by the other player.

  • Command and Control:

Orders are given by officers, and a unit’s distance from its officer can affect the success of the order, incorporating a leadership test mechanic.

  • Unit Status System:

Instead of removing models for casualties, units receive “hit” markers that reflect a loss of combat effectiveness, fatigue, or ammunition expenditure.

  • Scalability:

The rules are designed to be played at various miniature scales, from 15mm to 28mm, allowing for different table sizes.

  • Gentlemanly Gameplay:
The system encourages a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere, focusing on mutual agreement and a fun, historical experience over competitive rules lawyering.
