A Sky Full of Ships

A Sky Full of Ships is designed for large-scale sci-fi fleet engagements, focusing on fast-paced, “beer and pretzels” style gameplay. It allows players to command massive fleets of ships without getting bogged down in excessive detail, making it suitable for fighting epic battles in a reasonable amount of time.

Key Characteristics & Gameplay

  • Scale: Designed for large fleets (20-30+ ships per side) but scalable for smaller, 150-point starter games.
  • Generic System: It is a generic, miniature-agnostic system.
  • Movement: Uses a pre-plotting system where players write down movement orders at the start of the turn, which actually speeds up gameplay. Ships cannot collide and can pass through each other.
  • Combat: Features simple mechanics with primary weapons (36-inch range) and secondary weapons (6-inch range). Combat is often described as feeling like “Napoleonic naval combat in space”.
  • Damage Tracking: Ships use a display sheet to mark off damage, with weapons becoming less effective as the ship takes damage.
  • Flexibility: Rules are lightweight and easy to learn, allowing for quick games.
