Smooth & Rifled is a skirmish wargame system to simulate tactical engagements between 1700 and 1900. It covers historical periods ranging from the French and Indian War and the American Revolution to the Napoleonic Wars, the American Civil War, and various Colonial-era conflicts.
Core Gameplay and Mechanics
Scale: The game is designed for skirmish-level play with 28mm, 20mm, or 15mm miniatures, featuring small groups of soldiers, but it can accommodate larger, multi-player games with 50-60+ miniatures per side.
Action Point System: Players roll dice (typically three) at the start of the turn to generate Action Points (AP), which are then used to activate troops (up to three times) for movement, firing, or reloading.
Combat: The rules emphasize rapid gameplay, allowing for quick battles that can be completed in a short timeframe. Firing involves rolling d6s, where scores are modified by range and accuracy, with hits decided by a 4+ roll.
Rifled vs. Smoothbore: The system models the tactical differences of the era, distinguishing between slower-firing, accurate rifles and faster-firing, less accurate smoothbore muskets.
Individual & Unit Tactics: Rules cover unit formations, charging, melee, and morale.
Components: The rulebook (approx. 52 pages in the full-color version) includes rules for terrain generation, scenarios, and a quick reference sheet.
