Turnip28

Turnip28 is a “grimdark” post-apocalyptic, miniature-agnostic wargame set in a world obsessed with root vegetables, where players command small regiments of incompetent, muddy, and mutated soldiers. The game features a comedic yet horror-filled, Napoleonic-inspired aesthetic that encourages creative conversions and heavy use of texture, such as mud and dried plants on bases.

Core Setting & Vibe

  • Setting: A desolate, muddy, European-inspired landscape, that has been decaying for 1,000 years under the influence of a sentient root.
  • The World of Cist: A thousand years after Napoleon’s defeat, Europe has become a vast, polluted swamp. Technology has stagnated at an 1812 level, but everything is overgrown by “The Root”—a parasitic plant that has mutated humans into delusional, starving cultists.
  • Absurdist Tone: Armies don’t fight for nations or ideals; they fight for “sacred” parsnip patches and ancient tubs of lard. Soldiers are incompetent, cowardly, and more likely to eat each other than win a battle.
Gameplay Mechanics
  • Army Structure: You lead a “Regiment” composed of Snobs (incompetent officers like “Toffs” and “Toadies”) and Followers (units of Fodder, Brutes, or Chaff).
  • Panic & Blunders: The game relies heavily on 1D6 rolls. Units are prone to “blundering” orders on a roll of 1, often leading to chaotic or self-destructive consequences. Panic is a core resource; as units take damage, they become more erratic and likely to flee into bogs.
  • Cults (Factions): Players can choose “Cults” that add unique rules, such as:
    • The Slug’s Lament: Elite, mustachioed veterans who arrive late to the battle.
    • Tod’s Folly: Led by a “horrible little toad man,” this cult wins combats they lose and loses ones they win.
    • The Red Ribbon Society: A “gardening simulator” cult where you try to grow prize vegetables during the battle.
