The Null Guard: A Deadwake Sourcebook

What happens to a scream that is never answered?

In the fractured world of Deadwake, every faction clings to something. The Choir sings the past into being. The Compact builds community from shared belief. The Wayfinders chart paths through the echoes of yesterday. They all struggle against the Static, fighting to remember, to rebuild, to matter.

And then there are those who walk the other way.

The Null Guard are the answer to that unanswered scream. They are the silence that follows. Born from the psychogenic ruins of a catastrophic black-site experiment and forged in the mass mental sterilization of the Aegis Black Incident, they are a monastic paramilitary order bound to a single, terrifying principle: that existence is a flaw, emotion a contagion, and memory a disease to be cured. They do not march under banners or sing battle hymns. They do not seek territory or converts. They seek to unwrite history, silence doctrine, and erase the very things others hold sacred, not with fire and fury, but with a perfect, orderly, devastating quiet.

They are the surgeons of significance. Their tool is the scalpel of oblivion.

The Null Guard is a complete faction sourcebook for the Deadwake universe, and it is unlike any supplement you have encountered. This is not a book about a faction that fights differently. It is a book about a faction that makes you question whether fighting, whether any of it, ever meant anything at all.

As antagonists, the Guard are a nightmare that bypasses conventional defenses entirely. They do not target your army. They target the idea of your army. They assassinate the leaders whose deaths create martyrs, then erase the martyrs too. They do not destroy sacred relics; they strip them of meaning and leave the empty shells behind as a message. They do not break your soldiers’ bodies. They walk into the firelight, stand in silence for seventeen minutes, and leave your soldiers unable to remember why they were fighting. Their victory condition is not your death. It is a world in which you have no reason to exist.

As player characters, they are one of the most demanding and rewarding roleplaying experiences in the Deadwake universe. Every ability the Guard possesses comes at the cost of the self. The Null-Cascade Threshold system turns your character sheet into a battleground, with suppressed memories and erased identities threatening to resurface at the worst possible moments. Advancement does not mean gaining power. It means shedding weakness, and the line between the two is razor thin. The more you lean into the void, the more of your character you risk losing forever. Not as an abstract penalty. Literally. You cross items off your sheet. They are gone.

The faction itself is a masterwork of internal contradiction. An organization dedicated to erasing identity must still use designations to function. An order that rejects memory must maintain a perfect archive of everything it has destroyed. A brotherhood that abhors meaning is forced to wield meaning as a weapon to dismantle it. These fractures run deep, producing heretical splinter cells of chilling variety, from the White Nulls, who offer a mercy so absolute it hollows out the soul, to the Scream-Eaters, who have embraced the doctrine of erasure so completely they have turned it on the Guard itself, and on reality, and on the very concept of having a concept.

The world’s other powers fear them, study them, and occasionally try to weaponize them, with uniformly catastrophic results. Intelligence dossiers, field reports, classified corporate memos, and intercepted audio logs paint a picture of a faction that leaves no witnesses, no evidence, and no lingering sense that anything was ever there, only the faint, wrongness of a silence that is somehow louder than the noise it replaced.

Whether you deploy the Null Guard as the slow-burning antagonists of a narrative collapse campaign arc, build a cell of Null player characters willing to walk the Path of Disappearance together, or field them on the tabletop as an asymmetric force that attacks your opponent’s will to fight rather than their models, this book gives you everything you need. Lore, doctrine, history, tactics, gear, character options, campaign frameworks, scenario seeds, faction interactions, miniatures rules, and a philosophical foundation grounded in real theories of consciousness, memetics, and the nature of the self.

The void is not empty. It is listening.

And it has been watching you since you opened this page.
