Castles in the Sky is a steampunk miniature wargame set in an alternate early 20th-century world where Great Powers fight with airship fleets using salvaged Martian technology, allowing for 2D and 3D movement to control flying warships in skirmishes and campaigns.Players assemble fleets of ships—escorts, cruisers, and battleships—from eight nationalities, using mechanics for movement, altitude changes, aerial torpedoes, and ground attacks to achieve victory. The game uses a simplified campaign system and offers lists for eight different nations, creating epic battles of airborne ironclads.
The game takes place in an alternate early 20th-century Earth, circa 1914, where the Great Powers have discovered alien technology from a Martian invasion, enabling the development of flying warships.
The world’s navies now consist of fleets of these aerial behemoths, known as flying ironclads, which are the focus of the game’s conflicts.
Players control small fleets, typically using three to seven models, in miniature skirmishes.
Combat occurs in a 2D and 3D space, with players managing their ships’ movement, turns, and altitude.
Players assemble ships from classes like escorts, cruisers, and battleships, each with specific profiles including armor, speed, armament, and altitude capabilities.
The game incorporates a concept of “friction” which represents disruption and can reduce a ship’s speed and firepower.
Players will use dice to resolve actions, and ship stats like armament, fire power, and altitude are crucial for successful engagements.
