Chronopia – 3rd Edition

Chronopia is a dark fantasy tabletop miniatures wargame originally released in 1997 by Target Games. The game takes place in a bleak, war-torn apocalyptic world where ancient empires collide, designed around distinct 28mm to 32mm scale metal miniatures recognizable for their exaggerated armor, giant shoulder pads, and massive weapons. It is highly regarded for its robust, tactical ruleset and distinct subversion of classic fantasy tropes.

Setting and Lore

The game is set in the Eternal Realm, a world sliding into darkness following the collapse of a great alliance between Elves, Dwarves, and Ogres. The setting is defined by a deep history of mutual hatred, war, and the looming threat of absolute destruction.

The Playable Factions
  • The Firstborn: The human empire loyal to the “One King”. Their spellcasters, the Chronomancers, utilize time-manipulation magic on the battlefield.
  • Blackbloods: A strict, highly organized empire combining Orcs, Goblins, and Trolls, heavily inspired by classical Oriental and Arab military structures. Their alchemists serve as battlefield combat healers.
  • Elves: Far from peaceful forest dwellers, these Elves are divided into warring Noble Houses. They feature a dark aesthetic, use heavy combat units like Dragonbane Riders, and fuel their magic through drug-induced lotus trances.
  • Dwarves: Devastated by a cataclysm that warped their living gods into animalistic Totems, these Dwarves are aggressive cavern-dwellers split into powerful mining and warrior clans.
  • The Devout: The primary antagonists of the setting; a terrifying faction of corrupted mortals, undead hordes, and void-born demons serving the dark god known as the “Dark One”.
Gameplay Mechanics
  • Scalable Conflict: The ruleset uses a D20-based system and easily scales from small “Hero Skirmish” encounters (featuring 3 to 10 individual figures) all the way up to massive army battles with over 100 miniatures.
  • Tactical Balance: Chronopia prioritizes tactical positioning and combat unit management over overwhelmingly powerful individual “hero” units. Even low-tier frontline units retain a mechanical chance to injure or kill an enemy general if deployed correctly.
  • Unique Magic Systems: Rather than generic fantasy fireballs, magic is unique to each culture—ranging from time manipulation to alchemical healing and toxic botanicals.
  • Game Modes: Modern iterations of the system (such as the revived edition by Uhrwerk Verlag) include standard head-to-head competitive battles, co-op missions, narrative campaigns, and dedicated solo play modes against environmental threats
