Oak & Iron – 2nd Edition

Oak & Iron is a 1/600th scale naval miniatures game set during the Golden Age of Piracy, where players command small fleets of sailing ships to battle each other. The game focuses on tactical combat, requiring players to manage ship speed, sails, and crew fatigue, while using dice for attacks to damage enemy ships. Despite a simple ruleset, it offers deep tactical challenges, with options for different factions and historical characters.

  • Gameplay basics: Players alternate turns with initiatives chosen before the turn starts. Movement is dictated by wind direction and a set of tools.
  • Ship management: Each ship has stats for fortitude (armor), cannon strength, and crew strength, along with movement values.
  • Combat: Ships can attack with broadsides or by boarding. Attacks are resolved by rolling dice, with hits reducing a ship’s hull value and causing fatigue.
  • Winning: A ship is out of action when it is both crippled and fatigued. The game ends when one player runs out of ships or after 10 rounds, with the winner determined by score.
  • Key features:
    • Scale: 1/600th scale.
    • Theme: Age of Piracy, imperial expansion, and fighting sail.
    • Components: The core box includes ships, terrain, and wind indicators, and the game is designed for minimal painting and model building.
    • Players: Designed for 2 or more players, with options for team and solitaire play.
