Tribal – Second Edition

Tribal is pre-gunpowder, card-driven skirmish wargame focused on honor-based combat, where 20-30 warrior figures per side, including heroes and a warlord, fight for supremacy. Using playing cards instead of dice for activations and combat, players aim to gain Honor Points through heroic actions, often playing as Zulu, Viking, Maori, or Aztec tribes.

Key Features and Mechanics

  • Card-Driven System: Movement and combat are determined by two standard decks of cards, allowing players to actively participate in the fight by playing cards, acting as a “game within a game”.
  • Honour System: Victory is primarily determined by accumulated “Honour,” which is earned, lost, or spent on “dirty tricks” to win combats.
  • Warband Composition: Players command 20-30 miniatures, usually organized into small squads of 5 or as individual, powerful characters.
  • Gameplay Pace: The rules are simple enough to be learned in under an hour.
  • Customization: The system is adaptable to various historical and fantasy settings, such as Vikings fighting Orcs.
