Project: Waffle Iron – Fun Terrain and Objective Markers

by Epic Duck Studios

During a late-night painting session, the idea of a certain iconic Waffle restaurant opening a franchise in the Iron Kingdoms got a head of steam, and the Steamroller Objectives and Defenses were the result. The idea of an exploding Coffee Maker, or a giant robot slipping on a giant waffle, were just too funny to ignore.

I had also recently purchased a Flashforge AD5X 4-Colour FDM Printer, and because I don’t know how to do anything in moderation, I created an entire Waffle Iron restaurant that could be printed in pieces and snapped together. Great Games need Great Terrain, after all!

I based the Restaurant Scale around my already-successful Corner Store, which was originally created with Crisis Protocol miniatures in mind, but plays comfortably with anything around 30mm – it fits nicely on tables of Infinity, Grimdark Future, and more – so I knew I already had the sizing nailed.

BUT I have friends who are very invested in smaller scale games like Heavy Gear Blitz and BattleTech, and they wanted a Waffle Iron on their table just as much as everyone else… so I tweaked the design for smaller scales, and pre-supported it for resin printing. The 6mm Scale building includes an optional multi-hex base as well.

Finally, a friend suggested that I use some of the pieces from the Objectives to make Basing Bits, so that armies could be easily tied back to the Objectives and Defenses. This was a no-brainer, and gave me the opportunity to create some extra pieces like stacks of plates or spilled coffee that could easily bring everything together.

I've created the world's first Tactical Plate!
