Brunanburh: The Battle for Britain – The date is 937 AD, and the fate of Britain rests on the outcome of the famous battle of Brunanburh where the Army of the Anglo-Saxons marches north to confront the combined forces of the ‘Celtic Alliance’ of the Strathclyde Welsh, the Scots, and an army from Dublin of the Norse Gael. The two shield walls met near the fortified village of Brunanburh where what was ever after known as ‘The Great Slaughter’ resulted in the Celtic Shieldwall being split in two and the Celtic forces being routed. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles record that Athelstan’s mounted Huscarls slew many of the fleeing Celts in the bloody aftermath. These figures are from the Ragnarok Miniatures 9th Kickstarter! Well, actually it was more like three exciting Kickstarters rolled into one. The first was the massive Anglo-Saxon release featuring two whopping 6-point Saga Warbands featuring the Armies of Wessex under the High King of England, Athelstan, and his brother Edmund leading the armies of Mercian middle England under Uthred of Bebbanburg. Facing off against this formidable host was the combined forces of the ‘Celtic Alliance’ represented by 4-point saga warbands, representing the armies of the Strathclyde Welsh, the Scots, and an army recently arrived by ship from Dublin, the fearsome warriors of the Norse Gaels.
